CHICAGO (B)--United States Department of Agriculture has forecast the 2000 Texas wheat crop at 75 million bushels, down 39% from a year ago and 45% lower than the 1998 crop. Texas is the only state to issue a wheat production forecast in April.
Industry sources said private estimates for the Texas crop have been slightly higher, around 78 million bushels.
The Texas Agricultural Statistics Service indicated production in the Northern High Plains would total 34 million bushels, down 48% on the year. Although recent rains took precipitation totals in the region above normal in the last three months, it was "too little too late" for most wheat
The Blacklands harvest was put at 23 million bushels, up 20%, based on a 4% increase in acreage and good moisture conditions.
