Texas milk production totaled 427 million pounds during June, says the Texas Agricultural Statistics Service, down 10% from last year.

Production for May, 2001, totaled 476 million pounds. The number of milk cows during June averaged 325,000 head, down 25,000 head from last year and down 7,000 head from May, 2001. Production per cow averaged 1,315 pounds during June, down 3% from last year and down 8% from the 1,435 pounds during May, 2001.

Milk production in the 20 states participating in the monthly survey totaled 12 billion pounds, down 0.5% from production in these same states in June, 2000. May revised production, at 12.6 billion pounds, was down 0.9% from May, 2000.

Production per cow during June averaged 1,552 pounds, five pounds above a year ago. The average number of milk cows in the 20 states was 7.75 million head, 61,000 head fewer than last year, but 2,000 head more than May, 2001.
