Sales were confirmed on 72,900 head of cattle in Texas Panhandle and western Oklahoma feedlots Feb. 13, compared to 61,800 head the previous week and 89,000 head one year ago, according to the USDA Market News Service, Amarillo, TX.

Compared to last week, slaughter steers and heifers were steady, with instances of 50 cents higher. The majority of trade was completed Feb. 8, with small amount of clean up the morning of Feb. 9. A few feedlots were reluctant to sell at steady prices, electing to hold cattle until next week. Slight carry-over was noted, as some feedyard showlists were not fully depleted. Sales were confirmed on 47,300 slaughter steers and 25,600 heifers. This movement included 41,500 head of formulated cattle to be shipped the same week. The weighted average price of all beef-type steers this week was $77.99 per cwt. The average live weight of most cattle slaughtered at area packing plants last week was 1,167 pounds, with 42% heifers, compared to 1,178 pounds and 44% heifers the previous week and 1,172 pounds and 46% heifers the corresponding week a year ago.
