Read Joshua 1:1-9

The Lord said to Joshua, "Your God is with you wherever you go."

--Joshua 1:9 (NRSV)

It was more than 40 years ago in South Korea. Just before I was moved to the operating room, I opened the Upper Room devotional guide. The quoted scripture for the day was from the book of Joshua: "Be strong and courageous; do not be frightened or dismayed, for the Lord your God is with you wherever you go." This was the message I needed that October morning. I was deeply touched by the Lord's promise. With this assurance, I went to the operating room in peace.

As it turned out, however, I had a very difficult time during the surgery because of excessive bleeding. I remained in the operating room for more than 28 hours and received about 25 pints of blood.

When my home church heard that I was in critical condition, they started praying for me. Some even prayed through the night. At that time, though I really wanted to pray, I could not because the pain was so severe. But as I recovered, whenever I remembered that somebody was praying for me I found comfort, hope, and strength to face this painful situation. The prayers of my church made God's promise to Joshua real for me and showed me the importance of intercessory prayer.

Thank you, God, for the gift of prayer. We pray this day for all who need to know your presence. Amen.

Thought for the Day

I can make a difference; my prayers matter.
