The McAlester Union Livestock Market, McAlester, Okla., reported receipts of 3,200 head Aug. 29, compared to 4,000 head last week, according to the USDA Market News Service, Oklahoma City, Okla.

Compared to last week, stocker and feeder cattle were steady. There was a good attendance of buyers who were active on trade. Quality was mostly average with many Brahman-influenced calves in the trade. Cattle were in thin to fleshy conditions. Receipts were comprised of 42% steers, 48% heifers with 12% feeder cattle over 600 pounds. Slaughter cows and bulls were steady. There was a good attendance of buyers with strong demand for bred cows and pairs going to pastures where better moisture conditions exist. Many open cows were going to feed. A total of 950 cows and bulls sold with 35% going to packers.

Pairs: Medium and large frame 1, 2 to 7 years old, 825 to 1275 lbs., with 185- to 290-lb. calves, average quality, 940.00 to 980.00; 5 to 8 years old, 950 to 1125 lbs., with 135- to 165-lb. calves, average quality, 810.00 to 830.00.
