Kansas corn production is expected to total 416 million bushels, 4% below the previous forecast and 1% below last year's crop, says the Kansas Agricultural Statistics Service.
Acreage harvested for grain, at 3.25 million acres, is unchanged from the previous forecast, but up 9% from 1999. Corn yields are expected to average 128 bushels per acre, down five bushels from Sept. 1 and 13 bushels below the previous year.
Sorghum grain production is forecast at 176.7 million bushels, down 32% from last year. Kansas remains first in the nation in sorghum production. Yields are expected to average 57 bushels per acre, three bushels below last month and down 19 bushels from last year's yield. Acreage for harvest of grain is 3.1 million acres, down 100,000 acres from Sept. 1 and down 300,000 acres from 1999.
Soybean production is expected to total 59.4 million bushels, 13% below Sept. 1 and 27% below last year's crop. Acreage for harvest is expected to total 2.7 million acres, 150,000 acres below Sept. 1 and 100,000 acres below last year. Yields are expected to average 22 bushels per acre, two bushels below Sept. 1 and seven bushels below 1999.
Sunflower production is forecast at 302.5 million pounds, down 25% from last year. Harvested acreage, at 275,000, is up 8,000 acres from last year. The yield is expected to average 1,100 pounds per acre, down 28% from last year.
All hay production is estimated to total 6.07 million tons, down 16% from 1999. Acreage harvested is 2.8 million acres, up 100,000 acres from last year.
Kansas wheat production for 2000 is estimated at 347.8 million bushels, down 4% from the August forecast and down 20% from 1999. Yield is estimated at 37 bushels per acre, down two bushels from the August forecast and 10 bushels below the 1999 yield. Acres harvested for grain totaled 9.4 million acres, up 100,000 acres from the previous forecast and 200,000 acres more than the 1999 harvest. A total of 9.8 million acres were planted to wheat for harvest in 2000, down 200,000 acres from the previous year.
Oat production is 2.20 million bushels in 2000, down 33% from 1999. Final yield is estimated at 44 bushels per acre, down four bushels from the August forecast and three bushels from the 1999 yield. Grain was harvested from 50,000 of the 110,000 acres planted.
Barley production totaled 245,000 bushels for 2000, well below the 585,000 bushel crop in 1999. Yields averaged 35 bushels per acre, 10 bushels below last year. Grain was harvested from 7,000 of the 8,000 acres planted.
