Lamb imports in August 2000 from New Zealand were down 10.6% compared to August 1999, while imports from Australia were up 33.4%. Total lamb imports during August were up 20.7% compared to August 1999, while mutton imports were up 85.2%.

Lamb imports on a carcass equivalent basis totaled 93.8 million pounds during Aug. 1, 1999, to Aug. 1, 2000, a period equivalent to the first year of the Section 201 import adjustment agreement. This figure compares to 93.1 million pounds during Aug. 1 1998 to Aug. 1, 1999. This represents a 0.6% increase. During the first year of the program, lamb imports from New Zealand dropped 4.0%, while those from Australia increased 2.7%. Total mutton imports during this period increased 38.9%.
