Kansas State University alumni, traditionally among the most supportive in the nation, have climbed into the top five among similar colleges and universities based on alumni philanthropic support.
According to the just-released Council for Aid to Education annual report, K-State recorded 31,111 alumni donors from among its 134,480 alumni during the 1999-2000 academic year. At 23% participation, K-State ranks fourth nationally, trailing only the College of William and Mary, Williamsburg, VA, with 28% participation; the University of Virginia, Charlottesville, with 24%; and the University of North Carolina, Chapel Hill, with 23.14%.
Kansas State has ranked in the top 10 in alumni philanthropic giving among public research-doctoral institutions for a decade. K-State also leads the Big 12 conference in alumni giving. The second highest ranked Big 12 university is Texas A&M, College Station, with 22% alumni participation.
The alumni support ranking is based on gifts of cash, stocks, bonds, real estate or other assets to any of the nearly 4,500 funds managed by the KSU Foundation.
One of the keys to K-States alumni support is Telefund, the worlds largest all-volunteer telephone campaign for higher education. Over 1,500 student callers participated in Telefund 2001. They received pledges totaling $1.3 million from 21,818 alumni.
"K-State alumni are incredibly committed to their alma mater," said Gary Hellebust, president and Chief Executive Officer of the KSU Foundation. "Their generosity has a significant positive impact on the academic and outreach programs of the university."
Kansas State University alumni and friends contributed a record $44,547,203 to the KSU Foundation, in the fiscal year that ended June 30, 2001. This was the sixth consecutive year of record-breaking contributions. Donors committed an additional $16,214,434 through pledges, bequests and other planned giving vehicles, bringing the total gift activity to $60,761,637.
The KSU Foundation coordinates fund-raising efforts with alumni, friends, corporations and foundations to secure private support for Kansas State University.
