Edward F. Kruse and Howard W. Kruse of Brenham are each being recognized with a 2002 Outstanding Alumni Award from the College of Agriculture and Life Sciences at Texas A&M University.
Ed and Howard, who serve as chairman of the board and president/chief executive officer, respectively, of Blue Bell Creameries, were honored Oct. 10 during an awards convocation in the Memorial Student Center on the Texas A&M campus.
Ed graduated in 1949 and Howard in 1952 from Texas A&M University, both with bachelor's degrees in dairy manufacturing.
"It's a family affair, their business and their philanthropy," the nomination read.
The Kruse brothers have been staunch advocates for agriculture in a number of ways. Every year, they host more than 100,000 people of all age groups to tour their production facility, educating them about ice cream and agricultural processing methods.
Howard serves as the chair of the Texas A&M Agriculture Program Capital Campaign Leadership Committee. Ed has been a board member of the International Ice Cream Association for 30 years. He has served as president of the Dairy Product Institute of Texas and Dixie Dairy Products Association.
They have been very generous to Texas A&M, its students and programs over the past 25 years. Combined gifts from the Kruse brothers and Blue Bell Creameries total more than $1.3 million.
The Kruse support has included gifts for faculty endowments, student scholarships, program specific support, construction programs and libraries.
Among the endowments are Blue Bell Creameries Fund for Excellence, Agribusiness Teaching Endowment Fund, Ed and Howard Kruse Endowed Chair in the Bush School for Public Affairs, Mr. and Mrs. Howard Kruse Student Development Fund, and Bridges Chair in Veterinarian Medicine.
Also, Ed and Howard have supported scholarships in the Corps of Cadets, programs in the Department of Wildlife and Fisheries Sciences, College of Architecture, and student enrichment activities such as judging teams and internships.
