Kansas

An improved cattle economy and agreeable weather made the 22nd edition of the Kansas Beef Expo a success.

In its second year at Hutchinson, the expo saw a slight decrease in cattle numbers, but an increase in the overall sale average.

The nine breed sales averaged $1,618 on 240.5 lots, which included bulls and females. This average was up $39 per lot from 1999. The 33 commercial replacement heifers averaged $806, up $207 per lot from last year. There also was a definite trend toward increased sales of genetic packages, including embryos, flushes and "picks of the herd." This category generated $83,014 in sales. Including the replacement heifers, genetic packages, bulls and females, gross expo sales increased $89,841 over last year to a total of $498,657.

The 132.5 bulls averaged $1,731, up an average of $90 per lot from last year.

The 108 females averaged $1,479, down $58 per lot from 1999.
