SIOUX FALLS, SD--The state's Dec. 1 inventory of all hogs and pigs was 1.36 million head, up 8% from a year ago and up 6% from last quarter, according to USDA's South Dakota Ag Statistics Service.

Breeding stock totaled 140,000 head, up 17% from last year, and up 8% from last quarter. Market hogs totaled 1,220,000 head, up 7% from a year ago and up 6% above last quarter.

The September through November pig crop was 579,000 head, up 72,000 head from last year. During the quarter 65,000 sows farrowed, up 14% from 1999. Pigs per litter averaged 8.9, the same as a year earlier. Producers intend to farrow 65,000 sows during December through February 2001, 12% above the actual farrowings a year earlier.

Intentions for March through May 2001 are 67,000 sows, 8% above the actual farrowings a year earlier. The number of hog operations in South Dakota for 2000 was 1,900 farms, a decrease of 800 farms from a year earlier.

Operations by size group and change in 2000 are: 1 to 99 head, 800 operations, down 100; 100 to 499 head, 600 operations, down 600; 500 to 999 head, 220 operations, down 80; 1,000 to 1,999 head, 130 operations, down 30; 2,000 to 4,999 head, 90 operations, up 10; and 5,000 head or more, 60 operations, unchanged.
