New Holland, in conjunction with Harvest Tec, Inc., now offers hay preservatives, as well as hay and silage inoculant application attachments for round and square balers and forage harvesters. Timing is crucial in the production of quality forage, so when the right crop conditions come together with favorable weather, harvest must be fast and efficient. Use of crop preservatives and silage inoculants extends the window of opportunity for harvesting quality hay and forage.
CropSaver is a chemical hay preservative manufactured and packaged for New Holland by Harvest Tec, Inc., in Hudson, Wisconsin. CropSaver is effective in preserving hay, yet is as gentle as rainwater with a pH of only 6.0. It is formulated with two main ingredients: propionic acid and citric acid. The propionic acid is chemically buffered and neutralized for safety. Citric acid, which has been used for years to preserve food color and smell, maintains the hay's fresh smell and green color, even after storage.
By using CropSaver hay preservative, hay, including alfalfa and grass, can be baled at a maximum 30% moisture level. For small square bales, CropSaver can be used on cloudy, overcast days. It allows baling to start early in the day, as well as baling in the evening despite heavier dew moisture.
Because large square balers have the capacity to cover more acres than conventional balers, the use of hay preservatives is popular. Large square bales require an even closer watch on moisture levels, because they should be produced at levels under 16% moisture to prevent mold and create dust-free results. Extensive field testing has been done on alfalfa hay that has not been cured and still contains stem moisture as well as on hay that has cured completely, then baled at night with dew moisture present. The manufacturer offers specific recommendations for each condition.
Round bales can also be baled at moistures up to 30%. This allows the hours of operation to be extended, and insures consistent quality throughout the entire bale.
Preservative applicators are available for round and square balers, as well as forage harvesters. A 100-gallon system is available for New Holland's large square balers, Models 595 and 590. The use of preservatives allows these balers to bale between 16% and 30% moisture. The applicator fits neatly above the bale chute and is ready to go whenever the hay moisture climbs above a safe level.
A 25-gallon system for large round or conventional square balers holds enough preservative to treat 30 to 60 tons of hay. On round balers, the applicator is located on the tongue. For conventional square balers, the applicator sits next to the bale chamber.
The applicators are available with manual control, electronic cab control or automatic control. Computerized automatic control senses the moisture level on-the-go and automatically adjusts the rate of application to match it.
For preserving silage, a 100-gallon applicator system, compatible with New Holland's FX Series self-propelled forage harvester, turns on and off automatically when the intake rolls of the harvester are engaged. This applicator keeps the knives and blowers lubricated with water when harvesting alfalfa silage. The system can be used to apply crop inoculants when harvesting any crop.
A 55-gallon system, which clamps to the implement's tongue, is available for pull-type forage harvesters. It can be used to apply inoculants or water. A blower band lubricator nozzle efficiently places water on the implement's blower housing. This reduces horsepower requirements by 15% at a spray rate of 15 gallons per hour.
