COLUMBUS CITY, IA (AP)--State officials helped bury 605 hogs this week that died of unknown causes in a farm building in Louisa County.

The hogs at Lennie Finke's farm near Columbus City were nearly 240 pounds each and were just two weeks away from being ready for the market, Iowa Department of Natural Resources officials said.

Finke acted quickly, allowing the DNR to bury the hogs within 24 hours of being found, said DNR official Al Goldberg.

"As a result, we were able to help during a catastrophic situation for the producer."
