The hay trade was moderate to active, according to the Oct. 31 Kansas Hay Market Report, compiled by the Federal-State USDA Market News Service, Dodge City, KS.
Demand was moderate for dairy alfalfa and prairie hay; moderate to strong for stock cow alfalfa and alfalfa pellets; strong for grinding alfalfa. Prices are from the most recent sales. Grinders continue to search for grinding alfalfa. Alfalfa producers are puzzled over the lack of demand for the real good dairy alfalfa. Some are selling it to grinders, who are blending it in with other hay to stretch supplies.
In southwest Kansas, dairy and grinding alfalfa and alfalfa pellets were steady. Movement was moderate to active. Horse quality alfalfa was $100 to $130 per ton. Supreme quality dairy alfalfa was $100 to $115 per ton, instance, RFV 180 to 225, $120; premium quality, RFV 150 to 180, $100. Fair to good quality grinding alfalfa, at the edge of the field, was $85 to $95 per ton, winter contracts, $90 to $100; ground and short haul to feedlots, $90 to $105, winter contracts, up to $125. For the week ending Oct. 21, 14,804 tons of alfalfa were ground and delivered to feedlots. Sun-cured alfalfa pellets, 15% protein, were $110 to $133 per ton. Sudan, in large round bales, was $60 to $70 per ton.
In south central Kansas, dairy and grinding alfalfa were steady. Alfalfa pellets were steady to $5 higher per ton. Movement was moderate to active. Horse quality alfalfa was $100 to $120 per ton. Supreme quality dairy alfalfa, RFV 180 to 230, was $90 to $110 per ton; premium quality, RFV 150 to 180, $90 to $100. Fair to good quality grinding alfalfa, at the edge of the field, was $80 to $90 per ton, mostly $80 to $85; ground-on-the-truck, $80 to $95. For the week ending Oct. 21, 5,757 tons of alfalfa were ground and delivered to feedlots. Sun-cured alfalfa pellets, 15% protein, were $100 per ton; 17% protein, $110. Dehydrated alfalfa pellets, 17% protein, were $114 to $118 per ton. Sudan, in large round bales, was $60 to $70 per ton.
In southeast Kansas, dairy alfalfa, prairie hay and brome were steady. Movement was slow to moderate. Premium quality dairy alfalfa, RFV 150 to 180, was $90 to $100 per ton. Good quality bluestem, in small bales, was $60 to $80 per ton, mostly $70, in large square bales, $60 to $65, a little, $70, in large round bales, $45 to $60; fair quality and smaller lots, $50 to $60. Good quality brome, in square bales, was $60 to $80 per ton, in large round bales, $45 to $60. Sudan, in large round bales, was $60 per ton.
In northwest Kansas, dairy and grinding alfalfa were steady. Movement was moderate to active. Horse quality alfalfa was $105 to $110 per ton. Supreme quality dairy alfalfa, RFV 180+, was $90 to $105 per ton; premium quality, $85 to $100, some RFV 150 to 180, 47 cents per RFV point. Fair to good quality grinding alfalfa, at the edge of the field, was $70 to $85 per ton; ground-on-the-truck, $80 to $90. Sudan, in large round bales, was $60 to $65 per ton.
In north central-northeast Kansas, dairy and grinding alfalfa, prairie hay and brome were steady. Movement was moderate to active. Horse quality alfalfa was $120 to $130 per ton. Supreme quality dairy alfalfa, RFV 180 to 210, was 50 to 55 cents per RFV point; premium quality, RFV 150 to 180, $85 to $105 per ton. Fair to good quality grinding alfalfa, at the edge of the field, was $70 to $80 per ton; fair quality, $55 to $70. Alfalfa, ground-on-the-truck, was $80 to $90 per ton. Good quality bluestem, in square bales, was $60 to $70 per ton, in large round bales, $45 to $60. Brome, in square bales, was $65 to $80 per ton, mostly $70, in large round bales, $50 to $60. Good quality soybean hay, in large round bales, was $50 to $60 per ton; fair quality, $30 to $45.
