Michigan State University researchers recently published a study in Science magazine showing conservation tillage farm practices produce the least greenhouse gases and yet maintain farm productivity. The practices studied included: Conservation tillage, low input farming, and organic farming.

The study showed the no-till option had higher annual net production than low input or organic and was more like conventional crop productivity. Conservation tillage was the most environmentally friendly system examined, compared to low input and organic alternatives, which provided only one-third of the benefits when whole system global warming potential was analyzed.

The conservation system retained the most carbon of the systems examined and the study showed that conservation tillage has the potential to offset the annual U.S. increase in greenhouse gas production.

Monsanto's Roundup herbicide has been widely used in conservation farming because it effective and environmentally friendly. The company encourages growers interested in conservation tillage with programs such as "Bottom Line Booster."

The program gives growers a production guarantee of up to $10,000 to increase no-till or conservation tillage acres of Roundup Ready soybeans. Additionally, Monsanto provides growers with training in the use of conservation tillage and sponsors equipment programs with companies across the globe to allow farmers to start conservation tillage practices on their farms.
