Deloran "Del" M. Allen, vice president of Technical Services and Food Safety for Excel Corporation, was the recipient of the 2000 American Meat Science Association (AMSA) Signal Service Award.

The award was presented at the 53rd annual Reciprocal Meat Conference, held on the Ohio State University campus, in Columbus.

The AMSA Signal Service Award is given to members in recognition of devoted service and lasting contributions to the meat industry and to the association.

Dr. Allen, born in o, KS, received his bachelor's degree from Kansas State University, his master's from the University of Idaho and his doctorate from Michigan State University. He joined the Kansas State University animal science and industry faculty in 1966. Allen left the university in 1988 to join Excel Corporation, where he directs food safety and regulatory operations.

Allen has served the livestock and meat industry as a member of committees, task forces and advisory groups. He has given over 250 invited presentations; published numerous articles in journals, the popular press and in conference proceedings; and coached collegiate- and youth-level meat judging. Allen served as director of the AMSA from 1994 to 1998 and chaired the Reciprocal Meat Conference in 1996.
