A new label for Aim post-emergence herbicide allows it to be used for burndown of emerged weeds prior to planting of crops.
"Although Roundup and Touchdown are popular burndown herbicides, each has its weaknesses, and Aim tankmixed with either of them enhances weed control," says Mike Snyder, Aim product manager.
"Probably the most novel reason to use Aim is to add speed to a Roundup tankmix. Only one-sixth ounce per acre will drastically speed up the burndown, so that one to two days after application weed control activity is obvious," Snyder says.
The best burndown use of Aim is at the rate of one-third ounce per acre. This rate should be used for extreme weed conditions. "At a third ounce per acre with Roundup or Touchdown, Aim enhances activity against a range of tough broadleaf weeds, including all those listed as controlled or suppressed on the label," Snyder says.
An example from FMC field trial work is the control of smartweed. Seven days after treatment, two pints of Roundup resulted in 72% control, while the combination of two pints of Roundup and one-third ounce of Aim resulted in 94% control.
FMC lowered the price of Aim for the 2000 use season.
Weeds listed as controlled by Aim, at one-third ounce, are Eastern black nightshade, velvetleaf, lambsquarters, redroot pigweed, ivyleaf morning-glory and pitted morning-glory.
Aim, at the same rate, suppresses the following weeds: cocklebur, ragweed, sunflower, field bindweed, jimsonweed, kochia, entire leaf morning-glory, palmer amaranth, Pennsylvania smartweed, smooth pigweed, pricky sida, prostrate spurge, smooth groundcherry, trumpet creeper and waterhemp.
"Additional benefits in using Aim with Roundup or Touchdown are no antagonism between the herbicides, nor does the Aim add residual control that might limit recropping options," Snyder says.
