The Agricultural Retailers Association and fellow federal and state agricultural associations sent an ARA initiated stakeholder letter to Don Young, R-AK, Chairman of House Transportation & Infrastructure Committee and James Oberstar, D- MN, Ranking Member of House Transportation & Infrastructure Committee, urging them to include language in the Highway bill similar to Representative Doug Bereuter's proposal (HR 871) that continues the farm supply and agricultural commodity exemption to the hours of service (HOS) of drivers rules.

The letter was sent in response to several safety groups raising concerns about safety issues associated with exempted agricultural truck drivers. The ARA letter stressed that HR 871 is a necessary exemption that ensures essential crop inputs remain accessible to growers. The letter also assured the Congressmen that ag exempted drivers pose no additional safety risks because the exemption must first be adopted in each state with established planting and harvesting dates and is limited to a 100 air mile radius of a farm or distribution point.
