PARIS (B)--Advanta France, which said it would announce a compensation figure for farmers affected by the accidental import of oilseed rape with genetically modified (GM) material by June 16, is still refusing to reveal the final figure which should shortly be allocated to French farmers currently harvesting.

"Advanta France will not pay now as they will compensate farmers at the time they normally sell the grain," a spokesperson from the FNSEA, France's main agricultural union, told BridgeNews. "Advanta said it would compensate farmers and we will only interfere if the company doesn't pay on time," the spokesperson added. "Also Advanta will pay via the seed distributors," she added.

Advanta France said it would pay for farmers' loss of earnings as well as the cost of destruction.

Advanta also exported the seed to the U.K., Germany, Sweden and Luxembourg.

Ben Gill, president of the U.K. National Farmers Union (NFU) said July 3 that an announcement on the proposed compensation package for farmers is expected Wednesday. Up to 600 farms planted the seed across the U.K.

UKNFU estimates put the potential reimbursement at $4.5 million.
