Alice P. Boehme, Mullinville, Kan., submitted this recipe which was a finalist in the bread category.
1 cup oatmeal, quick cooking
Cook oatmeal in boiling water for 1 minute, stirring occasionally. Remove from heat and add honey, salt, margarine and sunflower seeds. Cool to lukewarm. Put yeast in warm water and let it get foamy, then add first mixture and mix well. Stir in 3 cups of flour. Turn out onto a floured board and knead for about 10 minutes. Form into a ball and put in a greased bowl, greasing top. Cover and let rise until doubled, about 1 1/2 hours. Punch down and form into 2 loaves and place in greased 8- by 4- by 2-inch bread pans. Let rise for 30 minutes and bake at 350 F for 35 minutes.
A dessert category finalist from Glenda Mohn, Cherokee, Iowa, is normally a hit. She says, "When I take this dessert somewhere I automatically put the recipe in my purse because everyone wants it."
2 brownie mixes
Mix brownie mixes according to directions. Add egg. Bake in 9- by 13 inch greased and floured cake pan. Mix cream cheese, powdered sugar and 1 container whipped topping. Put this mix on top of the cooled brownies. Blend puddings and milk together and put on top of the cream cheese mixture. Top with another layer of whipped topping. Put chocolate shavings or chocolate syrup on top. Refrigerate until ready to serve.
