FEED SUPPLEMENT--AgriLabs, St. Joseph, Mo., introduces First Arrival with Encrypt, a feed supplement that enhances the natural immunity of calves, to help with scours. Specially formulated for newborn calves, First Arrival is built around targeted egg-yolk proteins to combat 11 scour-causing pathogens. It also features Encrypt, an innovative formulation of organic, non-charcoal carbon sources to help improve gut health. Encrypt provides two unmistakable cues to know whether animals have been treated. Milk and milk replacer become black when adding First Arrival, and calves' manure becomes a characteristic dark-gray color. This unique confirmation reassures producers that calves have received this supplement, which is specially designed for both natural and conventional calf-raising programs. POUR-ON INSECTICIDE FOR BEEF CATTLE--Schering-Plough Animal Health Corporation, Kenilworth, N.J., announces ULTRA SABER, a new pour-on insecticide that controls horn flies on beef cattle and calves. ULTRA SABER is a new type of pour-on insecticide that contains 1 percent lambdacyhalothrin and 5 percent piperonyl butoxide, a synergist which improves insecticidal activity. Field trial results show new ULTRA SABER was the most effective treatment for reducing initial and subsequent horn fly populations during the eight-week trial period. The product also controls lice in beef cattle and calves. Lice infestations, which peak in late winter, cause reduced average daily gains. Infested cows also produce less milk for their calves. NEW NAME FOR Breed-Back FP--Beginning in the first quarter of 2008, the popular Boehringer Ingelheim Vetmedica Inc. Breed-Back FP reproductive vaccines family will be renamed Express FP--same vaccine, new name. Express FP 5, Express FP 10, Express FP 10-HS and Express FP 3-VL5 will offer cattle producers the same dependable protection against BVD Persistently Infected (PI) calves they've come to expect from the Breed-Back brand name, while bringing consistency to the Express product line. The Express FP product family, while under the Breed-Back label, is the first vaccine on the market with a label claim for "prevention of PI calves due to BVD Types 1 and 2." In addition, Boehringer Ingelheim Vetmedica is the only company that guarantees in writing PI-free calves when born from properly vaccinated cows. Additionally, the Express vaccine line has just received USDA-APHIS approval for use in whole-herd vaccination programs. For more information, call a local animal health professional or visit www.bi-vetmedica.com.
DELAYED-RELEASE COMBO IMPLANT--Intervet, Millsboro, Del., introduces Revalor-XS (trenbolone acetate and estradiol), the first delayed-release combination implant for steers fed in confinement that combines in a single implant the proven performance of trenbolone acetate and estradiol as an initial dose of Revalor-IS and a terminal dose of Revalor-S. Revalor-XS is able to eliminate the process of re-implanting because of its new delayed-release technology. The first dose goes to work immediately after implanting. The second dose--shielded by the patented X7TM polymer coating--goes to work 70 to 80 days later to deliver the performance of a Revalor-S terminal implant. Each implant contains 10 pellets--four uncoated and six X7 polymer coated pellets--and supports increased weight gain and feed efficiency for up to 200 days. For more information, call a local animal health professional or visit www.revalor.com.
Product receives new label claim for treatment of pink eye
Pfizer Animal Health recently announced DRAXXIN (tulathromycin) Injectable Solution is now approved for the treatment of infectious bovine keratoconjunctivitis, commonly known as pink eye, associated with Moraxella bovis in beef and non-lactating dairy cattle. The Food and Drug Administration approved the claim after reviewing research that showed a single dose of DRAXXIN was effective against pink eye associated with Moraxella bovis.
Not only can pink eye be frustrating, it can also be economically damaging. Dusty conditions, bright sunlight and fly infestations contribute to its spread. And slowed growth rate and increased handling are all additional costs resulting from this very contagious and damaging disease. In fact, pink eye can cost U.S. cattle producers up to $150 million per year.
DRAXXIN is also the only antibiotic approved for the treatment and control in cattle at high risk of developing bovine respiratory disease (BRD), also known as calf pneumonia, associated with all four major BRD bacterial pathogens: Mannheimia haemolytica, Pasteurella multocida, Histophilus somni and Mycoplasma bovis. This leader in BRD therapy now provides producers with even more benefits.
It is available in four sizes (50-, 100-, 250-, 500-mL) to meet the needs of any operation. Always follow label instructions to ensure proper use of the product.
For more information, talk to a veterinarian or Pfizer Animal Health representative, or visit www.draxxin.com, or www.pfizerah.com.
