RAKE PROTOTYPE--Pequea, New Holland, Pa., will release its TurboRake in 2009, but it recently gave a preview of the hay tool to farmers in Louisville, Ky. Through 2008, the TurboRake will be available for purchase on a limited basis. Three models with differing wheel counts will be available--TR8, TR10 and TR12. All models feature an individual arm on each wheel, resulting in improved tine wear because of the ability to follow ground contour better. Each arm also has a separate spring for individual wheel adjustment instead of a single large spring that limits users to central adjustment. Its high frame and wheel beam ground clearance provide greater room for fluffier hay. Every component of the TurboRake is American-made. For more information, call 866-684-0393, or visit www.pequea.com.

UTILITY TRACTORS--New Holland now offers 70- to 96 PTO-hp T5000 Series utility tractors, built for long life and enduring productivity with high-strength frames, axles and components. They have the power and strength to perform heavy-duty loader work and handle larger, heavier implements, and to excel in tough hay conditions and demanding roadside mowing applications. Powerful yet quiet four-cylinder engines provide the power and torque required for heavy-duty loader work and for operating hay tools, bat-wing mowers, feed wagons and mixers. The engines are turbocharged and intercooled for maximum fuel efficiency. The T5000 engine block is thicker and heavier for reduced noise and vibration. The maximum engine speed has also been reduced from 2500 RPM to 2300 RPM to further reduce noise and prolong engine life. And, they are approved for use with B100 biodiesel fuel meeting ASTM 6751 standards. For more information, call a local New Holland dealer, or visit www.newholland.com/na.

APPLICATION CONTROL--Ag Leader Technology, Inc., Ames, Iowa, announces its application control system DirectCommand now interfaces to the Raven Sidekick chemical injection pump for complete control over chemical injection applications, and it now has three channels of granular product control within the spreader module. The InSight display and CAN module will replace the Sidekick Console, directly connecting to the injection pump. Automated prime and calibration routines as well as advanced sensor diagnostics are part of the new direct injection module functionality. This addition can be used for herbicide, fungicide, and insecticide as well as N-Serve injection application. DirectCommand simplifies spreader control by controlling the conveyor and spinner speed in addition to monitoring the bin-levels. The system reads ground speed and automatically adjusts product flow to match target application rate. For more information, call 515-956-7171, or visit www.agleader.com.

Pre-season pivot maintenance prevents downtime

A well-maintained irrigation system will perform with peak efficiency during the prime watering season, saving growers lost yield potential from costly downtime. According to Richard Panowicz, Valmont Irrigation's Aftermarket Sales Manager, the key to optimal productivity and reliable performance is pre-season preventive maintenance of a center pivot, corner or linear machine. Many growers have realized that investing in yearly maintenance for their irrigation machines actually saves them money over the years, just like pre-season maintenance does for their other agricultural machinery.

After a long, demanding irrigation season, growers need to get their equipment back into prime condition to be ready for the next season. Valley recommends growers implement a yearly preventative maintenance program that is offered by Valley dealers across the country. These programs are tailored to your individual needs depending on the initial condition of your machines.

From the pivot point itself and its incoming power source to the spans, alignment, and drive units, Valley certified program checklists are thorough enough to ensure the entire system is in optimal condition for the upcoming season. Qualified Valley technicians can provide service or parts as needed so the equipment is fully operational again.

Several key checkpoints are included. For a complete listing of other key pre-season maintenance items, contact your local Valley dealer.

By investing in the off-season to perform critical checks and preventive maintenance on your irrigation machines, growers can ensure their Valley irrigation equipment will continue to be reliable, durable, and precise during the next demanding watering season.

Application requirements for corn fungicide updated

BASF, Research Triangle Park, N.C., announced its 2008 application requirements for Headline fungicide in corn.

BASF continues to invest time and research into supporting its product portfolio, including Headline. The 2008 requirements build on that deep understanding of corn fungicide application as Headline has more than 5,000 on-farm trials on a quarter of a million acres to its credit. With every extra bushel of corn needed to meet rising demand, proper fungicide application is important to maximizing yield.

The 2008 application requirements for Headline in corn are as follows. The optimal application window for Headline is the VT stage through R2 (full tassel through blister). At the VT stage or later, Headline may be used with an adjuvant. When Headline is used prior to full tassel stage, do not use an adjuvant. The VT stage begins when the last branch of the tassel is completely visible outside the whorl (see illustration on page 2).

Headline fungicide offers disease control with plant health benefits, as well as better standability at corn harvest. Results from on-farm field trials in 2007 showed a 12 to 16 bu/A corn yield advantage.
