Youth Livestock Program Upcoming Dates
Please mark your calendars for the following:
December 7, 2013 - Kansas Junior Beef Producer Day, Manhattan, KS: This event will be a fun filled day of activities in which youth, parents, beef project leaders and adults can increase their knowledge and experience of beef production and management practices. Presentations and demonstrations by K-State faculty and staff will cover topics such as selecting your youth project, nutrition, and show ring skills. This highly interactive, hands-on educational event will stimulate your enthusiasm and provide a foundation in management and care for your youth beef project this coming year.
March 15, 2014 - K-State Animal Sciences Leadership Academy applications must be postmarked by this date. (Updated application coming soon on the webpage.)
March 29, 2014 - Kansas Junior Sheep Producer Day, Manhattan, KS: This day will bring together youth, parents, sheep project leaders and others to increase their knowledge about sheep production and management. This event is designed for all ages and skill levels and we work hard to provide hands on learning experiences for younger participants. Online and print registration will be avaiilable at a later date on the Youth Livestock Program webpage.
*Note the same Livestock Fair Management Clinic will be held at two different locations on April 1 and 2.
April 1, 2014 - Livestock Fair Management Clinic, Topeka, KS April 2, 2014 - Livestock Fair Management Clinic, Great Bend, KS: This clinic is designed for county fair board members, extension agents, and volunteers involved in local livestock fair management and leadership. This professional development opportunity consists of an activity filled day to increase awareness and knowledge and provide a forum for open communication for individuals working with local livestock fairs across Kansas. K-State faculty and staff will facilitate discussion directly toward livestock activity at local livestock fairs in Kansas. Example topics that could be discussed include animal identification methods, marketing outlets, premium sales, and county fare management and facilities. Registration will be $15/person and will be posted on the webpage in December.

June 3-6, 2014 - Discovery Days, Manhattan, KS: Look for classes instructed by the Department of Animal Sciences and Industry!
June 11-14, 2014 - K-State Animal Sciences Leadership Academy, Manhattan, KS: Twenty high school students will be selected to participate based on educational, community, and agricultural involvement, as well as there interest and drive to further their leadership skills in not only there community but also in the livestock and agricultural industry. Students will stay in campus housing and receive training in Weber Hall as well as tour the university's animal science facilities and Kansas livestock businesses. The academy is sponsored by the Livestock and Meat Industry Council. Applications will be available in December and are due March 15, 2014.
June 15, 2014 - Commercial heifer, Market/Commercial swine, market/commercial lamb, and meat goat nominations must be postmarked by this date: Please see nomination information on the webpage for more information.
July 11-12, 2014 - Dr. Bob Hines Kansas Youth Swine Classic, Manhattan, KS: Youth swine show with educational sessions and competitions.
