Intertribal Agriculture Council Youth Essay Contest Information
The IAC will provide an all-expense paid trip to 3 finalists including one adult chaper-
one per student. Finalists will present their written work at the 2013 IAC Membership
Meeting at the Flamingo Las Vegas, NV, December 9-13, 2013.   Youth and chaperone
will be expected to arrive in Las Vegas on Monday, December 9 and depart Friday,
December 13th. Deadline is 4pm (MST) on November 1, 2013. Finalists will be notified
and travel arrangements made by November 15th, 2013.
Theme: “Perseverance + Sustainability = Food Security:
Feeding Ourselves in a Rapidly Changing World”
In your own words, define all three words (perseverance, sustainability & security) from a food and
agriculture perspective and what do they mean to you?   
Tell us who you are, where you come from and your family’s involvement in agriculture/food pro-
duction (either now or in the past).  Share the story of how your ancestors survived and how they
continue their way of life today.  Make sure your essay includes how they survived and fed them-
selves.  
- What did they do throughout their history that helped them to continue in agriculture and in
feeding their families and communities?  
- What have you learned from your ancestors that will help you and future generations of your
family to assure a secure livelihood and continue in agriculture?
- What do you think you need to do to continue and thrive in  agriculture today?  
- How can you help your Tribal leadership achieve food security?
Essay Guidelines: 3-6 pages in length, typed, double spaces, 12-point font, one inch margins
Judging Criteria: Organization of information, spelling and punctuation, quality of grammar and
length of entry.

Intertribal Agriculture Council sponsors Youth Essay Contest

 

BILLINGS, MT — September 5, 2013 — The Intertribal Agriculture Council is sponsoring a Youth Essay Contest for Native American Youth enrolled in a Federally Recognized Tribe and entering grades 9-12 during the 2013-2014 school year.  This is a great opportunity for youth to showcase their writing talents. The theme for the contest is “Perseverance + Sustainability = Food Security: Feeding Ourselves in a Rapidly Changing World”. We are excited to hear what these terms mean to youth and their personal history from a food and agriculture perspective.

 

The deadline for submissions is 4pm (MST) on November 1, 2013. Please encourage all eligible youth to enter. IAC will provide an all-expense paid trip to 3 finalists including one adult chaperone per student.
