![]() KSU Photo Low Soil pH
Appearance: Foliage will develop purplish color. Symptoms: Stunted plant growth, inadequate tillering and plant death in extreme circumstances. Scouting: Soil testing to confirm acidity levels. Treatment: Lime according to soil test recommendations. Apply in furrow phosphorous at planting. OSU & KSU Photos Aluminum Toxicity
Symptoms: Plants may show stunted growh, purple leaves and/or poor root development; occurs with low pH soils. Scouting: Look for poor emergence in fall and other symptoms in early spring; take soil test for determination. Treatment: Some varieties have higher Aluminum toxicity resistance; also a lime application to correct pH may be warranted. |
KSU Photo Iron Chlorosis
Symptoms: Yellow striping between leaf veins on new growth. Scouting: Look for symptoms in early spring during "green up" period; take soil sample to determine pH levels. Treatment: Select varieties with higher resistance to calcareous soils. KSU Photo Nitrogen Leaf Burning
Symptoms: Browning of tissue exposed to fertilizer on the leaves in a distinct pattern left by the application rig. Scouting: Occurs topically just after topdress applications. Treatment: Should grow out of it; use of streaming nozzles versus flat fan nozzles may reduce the amount of leaf burn from topdressed nitrogen. KSU & OSU Photos Phosphorous Deficiency
Symptoms: Plants often have stunted growth with a purple hue on leaves. Scouting: Look for stunted growth after emergence and during early spring growth; soil test questionable field to confirm Phosphorous levels. Treatment: Apply Phosphorous according to soil test needs to correct deficiency levels for the next crop. | |||||
