Niobrara County 4-H meat judging team third in national competition
Wyoming The Niobrara County 4-H Meat Judging team representing Wyoming claimed third place in the American Royal Livestock Show's national 4-H meat judging and identification contest. Kansas State University in Manhattan, Kan., hosted the event Oct. 27.

4-Hers call for H.U.G.S.
Oklahoma Anyone who would like to help kids stay warm this winter can contact a 4-H member anywhere in Oklahoma County and give them some "H.U.G.S." H.U.G.S. are new hats, underwear, gloves and socks that are collected by 4-H clubs and members in the fall and delivered to kids who need them through churches, schools, community groups and other outreach avenues.

Animal welfare group protests at Canadian Finals Rodeo
EDMONTON, Alberta (AP)--An animal welfare organization is protesting outside the Canadian Finals Rodeo in Edmonton. The director of the Voice of Animals Humane Society says her group is particularly concerned about calf-roping at the recent competition. Director Tove Reece says many calves die or are so badly injured they have to be destroyed.

Rodeo won't be invited back in 2014, group says
FARMINGTON, N.M. (AP)--The National High School Finals Rodeo will not be invited back to northwestern New Mexico in 2014. The Tres Rios High School Rodeo Association voted Nov. 10 not to ask the rodeo back because of the national association's lack of concern for the losses communities incurred hosting the event. The rodeo association estimates hosting the high school finals rodeo cost local governments about $225,000.

Women's Pro Rodeo finals in Lincoln in 2010-2011
LINCOLN, Neb. (AP)--The Lancaster Event Center manager says Lincoln will host the Women's Pro Rodeo Association World Finals in 2010 and 2011. The Lincoln Journal Star reports that the event attracts 300 to 400 competitors and is expected to have a $3 million economic impact on Lincoln each year. Event Center manager Ron Snover said the rodeo association has already booked 500 horse stalls and every building on the grounds for the Oct. 11 to 17...

Deer hunting season a fall tradition in Oklahoma
Don't tell Walt Disney, but it is by no accident that deer hunting season occurs in the fall in Oklahoma. In the movie, the deer were courting in the spring; they actually do this in the fall, said Jim Shaw, a professor of natural resource ecology and management with Oklahoma State University's Division of Agricultural Sciences and Natural Resources. "The biggest harvest is always on the opening weekend of the deer gun season," Shaw said.

Ford County Extension Appreciation, News Media awards presented
The 2008 recipients of the Ford County Extension Appreciation Award were Dan Schnitker of Cargill and Mary Lett. Schnitker and Lett received their awards recently during the Ford County Extension Council's election meeting which was held Oct. 30 at the Ford County Fair Building. The Extension Council Appreciation Award is presented to an individual, couple or organization who has given a considerable amount of extra effort in support of the Extension Council educational programs.
