Spacious Dalby designed for sloping lots

Skylights and dormers brighten the Dalby (402-58), a compact tri-level home with an airy, spacious feeling. This three-bedroom plan is designed for a lot that slopes down to the right.

Garage, utilities and a huge storage room are on the lowest level, half a flight down from the main floor. Master suite and one of two secondary bedrooms are on the second floor, a full flight up from the garage, but only half a flight up from the main floor. An eye-catching curved walkway sweeps up from the driveway to a small porch.

Vaulted ceilings throughout combine with a wealth of windows to create the sense of spaciousness. Bathrooms are the only rooms on the main and second floor that aren't vaulted. Additional light streams into the kitchen, dining room, stairwell and master suite through skylights. Indoor greenery and tropical plants flourish in this rich light.

In the kitchen, an abundance of counter space lets two or three cooks work together without getting in each other's way. This room is suffused with so much natural light that artificial sources will rarely be needed during daylight hours. Above counter level, most of the street-facing wall is filled with windows.

The ceiling above the windows slopes up to a high back wall, creating the unique feature of a row of multi-paned windows and lends a look of graciousness to the room. These allow for shared light between the kitchen and living room and can be opened for cross-ventilation as well.

The dining room is also well illuminated. In addition to the skylight, it has windows on three sides. Sliding French doors open on a large deck to the rear, offering easy access for outdoor dining. The deck wraps around the side, ending parallel with the front facade.

On the upper level, the master suite shares a bathroom with the other secondary bedroom. Both the bathroom and bedroom two have window seats tucked in the front-facing dormers.
