    Montana cattleman elected vice chairman of American Simmental Board

    Jim Butcher, Lewistown, Mont., has been elected vice chairman of the 16-member Board of Trustees of the American Simmental Association. A partner in Gateway Simmental and a former president of the Montana Simmental Association, Butcher is involved in producing and marketing Simmental-influenced seed stock including “Lucky Cross” hybrids.     A team of Kansas State University students won the 2013 Midwest Regional Animal Science Academic Quadrathlon held in Des Moines, Iowa, March 10 to 13.     The 81st Southwest Missouri Cattle Improvement Association Bull Sale saw a strong demand March 25 for the 35 bulls that sold.     Fall-calving Show-Me-Select Replacement Heifers will be auctioned in two southern Missouri sales next month: May 4 at 1 p.m., Fruitland (Mo.) Livestock Auction in southeastern Missouri; and May 17 at 7 p.m., Joplin Regional Stockyards, Carthage, in southwestern Missouri.     Nebraska Farmers Union submitted supportive comments on April 11, the final day for comments to USDA relative to their proposed rule to strengthen Country of Origin Labeling regulations. The USDA proposed changes to the rules for COOL implementation are in response to the World Trade Organization decision on COOL.
