Sellers say processor often paid late

SIOUX FALLS, S.D. (AP)--Prosecutors pressed livestock sellers to acknowledge that an Iowa kosher slaughterhouse was often late with payments as they try to prove the plant broke an 88-year-old agricultural law. Former Agriprocessors Inc., manager Sholom Rubashkin faces 91 financial fraud charges, among them allegations that he broke a law mandating purchasers make timely payments to livestock sellers. Harrell elected American Hereford Association president

Bob Harrell Jr., Baker City, Ore., was announced as the new president of the American Hereford Association during the Annual Membership Meeting in Kansas City, Mo., Nov. 2. Bob and his family operate Harrell Hereford Ranch in eastern Oregon. The ranch consists of 300 registered cows, 400 commercial cows, an 800-head feedlot and 45 Quarter Horse broodmares. [Read More]

American Royal Hereford champions named

Golden Oak Outcross 18U and KLD BR Carol Neon D85 ET won the grand champion bull and female titles at the 2009 American Royal National Hereford Show, Nov. 1 in Kansas City. Firm plans meatpacking plant in Bismarck

BISMARCK, N.D. (AP)--A company is looking for a site in the Bismarck-Mandan area for a meatpacking plant that could slaughter up to 800 cattle a day and export 60 percent of the beef to South Korea. Former K-State meats professor named Distinguished Alumni

Kansas Kansas State University has honored a former professor whose influence in the meat industry has been felt across the United States. Dell Allen, who graduated from K-State in 1961 with a degree in animal sciences and later taught at the university for 22 years, was recognized as the 2009 Animal Sciences and Industry Distinguished Alumnus during a day-long visit to campus on Nov. 6. FDA approves camelina as cattle feed supplement

BILLINGS, Mont. (AP)--Camelina companies say federal officials have approved the use of meal from the biofuels crop as a 10 percent supplement in cattle feed--a development that could boost the prospects for Montana's fledgling camelina industry. Two companies, Great Plains Oil & Exploration and Sustainable Oils, have been working in recent years to develop a market for camelina for use as a replacement for jet fuel or diesel. Iowa's family beef farmers fuel hungry runners

Iowa Some 7,500 runners will enjoy hot beef stew served by Iowa's local beef producing farm families following the annual Living History Farms Cross Country Run on Nov. 21. Taiwan: No quid pro quo for lifting U.S. beef ban

TAIPEI, Taiwan (AP)--Taiwan's president says the island has not received anything in exchange for lifting a long-standing ban on the imports of certain U.S. beef cuts.
