Smartphone application crunches data

The Mosaic Company has recently launched a smartphone application, the Nutrient Removal App, as part of its on-going commitment to provide next-generation growers and retailers with innovative tools. The free app, available on smartphones and mobile tablets, makes nutrient removal data readily available in the office, field or tractor. The app serves as a new tool for growers as they partner with their local agronomist to plan for next year's planting season and crop nutrient programs.

Utilizing years of agronomic research, the nutrient removal data seen in the "Balanced Crop Nutrition" guide created last season and available on Back-to-Basics.net, provides growers and retailers with a valuable reference tool in support of higher yields. The app allows users to customize their nutrient removal data to generate crop- and region-specific results. Randy Groff, Marketing Manager for The Mosaic Company, sees the app as an invaluable smartphone innovation. "This data is the foundation and starting point for fertilizer recommendations," Groff said. "It's used all the time by growers and retailers, in flip charts, wall posters, and wallet cards. With the best data and the newest technology, farmers and retailers now have the best of both worlds. "

The importance of fertility in maximizing yield cannot be underestimated. According to the International Plant Nutrient Institute, best management practices suggest that 40 percent of yield can be attributed to the 4 R's--applying the right fertilizer, in the right amount, at the right time, to the right place. By using the app, growers will be able to test potential yields and formulate the right plan for their own nutrient applications.

Once it's downloaded, the Nutrient Removal App can be used without Internet service, and contains customizable data for 36 different crops. After the crop and desired yield are selected, results can be stored as part of an individual profile, and/or emailed to other contacts. Users can find the Nutrient Removal App at both the Apple App Store and the Android Market.

New BRD therapy is approved

The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has approved Pulmotil, an innovative Bovine Respiratory Disease (BRD) treatment for groups of cattle in the early stages of a BRD outbreak that provides 14 days of sustained in-feed therapy, a practice that reduces stress associated with cattle handling.

Pulmotil is approved for the control of BRD associated with Mannheimia haemolytica, Pasteurella multocida and Histophilus somni in groups of beef and non-lactating dairy cattle, where active BRD has been diagnosed in at least 10 percent of the animals in the group.

"As cattle are assessed for BRD, Pulmotil can be fed within the first 45 days after arrival when cattle typically are most susceptible to the disease," said Jared Gould, DVM, MS, technical consultant for Elanco. "By treating with Pulmotil, producers can reduce the number of cattle pulled for individual treatment."

Gould explained that the practice of feeding Pulmotil provides additional value-enhancing benefits. "It's a good fit for producers who have limited labor resources or where equipment for processing cattle is not easily accessible," he said. "And with an in-feed therapy, less cattle handling is required, which can reduce stress compared to other treatment options that require more individual animal management."

Similar to the prescription requirement for injectable products, the FDA requires a veterinarian to issue a Veterinary Feed Directive (VFD) for the use of Pulmotil. The VFD helps ensure veterinarian oversight and judicious use of Pulmotil according to the label use and feeding directions. The VFD process requires a coordinated effort by the producer, feed-ingredient supplier, veterinarian and nutritionist. Elanco will help facilitate this process through training and ongoing support.

Before making the product widely available, Elanco will conduct additional commercial trials, and work closely with veterinarians and their clients to develop protocols that support the VFD process and maximize Pulmotil's value in a variety of commercial settings.

"As we work through this initial period, we'll communicate best practices and benefits associated with this new BRD in-feed treatment protocol with beef and dairy producers," Gould said.

Blended seed corn products now available for 2012

The Channel seed brand will introduce 17 new Genuity VT Double PRO RIB Complete blended seed corn products as part of its 2012 product lineup.

Now available is a broad selection of Channel Genuity VT Double PRO RIB Complete products in the 84- to 116-day maturity range in the corn-growing area. This advanced technology offers a single-bag refuge management solution with dual modes of action for control of above ground pests, including corn earworm.

Farmers can plant Channel Genuity VT Double PRO RIB Complete across their fields, without the need for a separate, structured refuge, resulting in simpler refuge management, time savings and convenience. In the cotton-growing area where a 20 percent separate, structured refuge is required, Channel will offer traditional Genuity VT Double PRO products for proper insect resistance management.

The new technology blends 95 percent Genuity VT Double PROBt corn and 5 percent non-Bt refuge seed in each bag. The 5 percent refuge is the lowest available, enabling farmers to protect more of their acres with traited seed and maximize their whole farm yield opportunity. Commercialization is pending individual state authorizations and notifications, as required, following U.S. Environmental Protection Agency regulatory approval on Nov. 17.
