Blood pregnancy test proves accuracy

Recent advances by BioTracking LLC now allow BioPRYN and BioPRYNQK users to determine the pregnancy status of livestock as early as 28 days post-breeding. When applied at 28 days post-breeding or later, these tests correctly identify greater than 99 percent of pregnant cows.

This change to earlier application of the BioPRYN test gives producers greater flexibility to apply the pregnancy test and still maintains the same high-level of accuracy. Producers are able to increase reproductive efficiencies in their herds by identifying open cows earlier than previously available. Two more days to identify open animals and rebreed them saves on cost of days open and also allows producers to confidently resynchronize cows identified as open with improved BioPRYN.

"The movement from 30 to 28 days post breeding resulted from continued research by BioTracking and through our commitment to providing livestock producers and veterinarians with the most up-to-date and technologically advanced solutions available," said Doug Pals, BioTracking director of marketing. "Our main goal is to be on the leading edge of technology in diagnostic testing through research within the blood based pregnancy market and other diagnostic tests."

New triple axle trailer debuts

Timpte Industries has expanded its American Ag Series product line. This product line will now include a 50-foot American Ag Series Tri-Axle Model. Production of this model will begin roll off the assembly line December 2011.

The 50-Foot American Ag Series Tri-Axle has been designed for consumers who prefer the look, style, and ease of access of the 15 degree front and rear slope. Because of the Tri-Axle model design, consumers will have the ability to haul larger payloads in states that allow higher weights with multiple axles. The American Ag Series contains top-of-the-line features, much like the legendary Super Hopper that was introduced in 1980.

Timpte's trailers are engineered to be lightweight and rugged, but most importantly, to offer years of dependable service. In addition, engineering has perfected the smooth, aerodynamic side walls for maximum fuel efficiency. A wide variety of options are offered for all Timpte trailers, and each trailer is backed by a three-year limited warranty.

Case expands precision farming offerings

Case IH will expand its Advanced Farming Systems (AFS) precision farming offering by introducing a new GPS receiver and new variable-rate controller and telematics systems and AFS software. Recently, Case IH unveiled an expanded AFS software package, AccuControl rate controller technology, the AFS 372 receiver and AFS Connect telematics.

Representing the first commercial telematics launch for Case IH, AFS Connect provides wireless connectivity to our Pro 600 and Pro 700 display through cellular data. AFS Connect will provide up-to-date information regarding fleet management, a virtual display of cab monitors in the office, performance analysis, file management received from the field, and two-way messaging, among other key features.

The all-new Case IH AFS software suite will greatly expand upon the current capabilities of AFS desktop software, while also seamlessly interfacing with previously collected AFS data. At launch, the Case IH AFS software offering will include five packages designed to work together and meet a variety of needs.

--AFS View allows producers to view and track their data with a customized list of farms and fields, which can then be shared with precision farming devices for data management.

--AFS Mapping & Records can accumulate yield, moisture and application data and track and/or print field records for restricted-use chemicals, fertilizer applications, equipment maintenance, crop plans, invoices and more.

--AFS Accounting integrates all farm financial records for easy production cost comparison, enabling producers to make more informed decisions to improve farm profitability.

--AFS Water Management helps users identify optimal placement of tile and surface drains in both surface and sub-surface drainage water management projects.

--AFS Mobile streamlines data management in the field by bundling record keeping, mapping, soil sampling and variable rate application into one software solution that is easily portable and allows producers to access important information anytime and anywhere.

Using the new AFS AccuControl rate controller technology, Case IH AFS Pro 600 and AFS Pro 700 display users can vary sprayer, spreader, planter and seeder rates or turn implement sections, including non-Case IH implements, on and off.

The Case IH AccuControl manages a wide variety of applications and creates as-applied maps:

--Planters: Controls up to four sections and up to 48 rows for individual row shut off; manual configuration of section and row orientations and variable rate seeding at up to four different section rates

--Sprayers and anhydrous/strip till applicators: Controls up to four rates and 48 boom sections; multiple-product variable rate control for up to four different liquid, anhydrous and dry granular products

--Self-propelled and trailing spinner spreaders: Multi-product variable rate control on up to four different liquid or dry products.

The new Case IH AFS 372 receiver is a combined GPS and GLONASS integrated receiver/antenna. By combining the functionality of the U.S. GPS and Russian GLONASS (Global Orbiting Navigation Satellite System) systems, the AFS 372 receiver has the capability to include up to 44 satellites in a position solution, resulting in improved uptime during crucial field operations.

Case IH customers can use the differential correction option and accuracy that's best for their operation. The AFS 372 supports RTK correction sources such as Trimble VRS, CORS and traditional RTK via radio transmission. It is also compatible with CenterPoint RTX, DGPS corrections such as EGNOS, WAAS, and MSAS, as well as OmniSTAR corrections VBS, XP and HP.

The AFS 372 receiver replaces the AFS 252 and AFS 262, so integrating it into current equipment is quick and easy.

New policy available

AgriLogic Insurance Services and Silveus Insurance Group have announced a new companion corn policy that protects producers against shallow revenue losses that are not covered under traditional subsidized multi-peril plans offered by the U.S. Department of Agriculture Risk Management Agency (RMA).

This coverage is offered as an enhancement to a typical Revenue Protection (RP) policy that normally protects only 65 to 85 percent of a producer's average historical production (APH) and market losses. ARC coverage enables producers to insure crops against "top-end" losses, which can be 25 to 30 percent of a farmer's expected income. This coverage will trigger when area revenue losses reach as little as 10 percent of a county's historical trend yield times RMA's Revenue Protection Crop Insurance Program's "Projected Price." Indemnities would be limited to the amount of a producer's deductible or $250/acre, whichever is less.

New vaccines approved against reproductive disease

The U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) has approved Titanium 5 L5 and Master Guard 10 vaccines as an aid in preventing disease caused by Leptospira borgpetersenii hardjo-bovis in beef and dairy cattle. Leptospira, which often infect calves at a young age and easily spread within herds, ultimately can cause reproductive failure and significant economic loss. Now producers can vaccinate cattle that are not pregnant or nursing with Titanium 5 L5, and all cattle 5 months of age or older with Master Guard 10, to protect against this costly organism.

"Dairy and beef producers are well-aware of just how expensive abortions and other reproductive problems caused by 'lepto' can be," said Charlie Higdon, business unit manager, AgriLabs. "Research estimates that at least 59 percent of dairy herds and 42 percent of cow-calf operations have cattle with L. hardjo-bovis. Since the organism is spread within herds through urine and milk, and the disease it causes is difficult to diagnose, prevention through vaccination is smart business."

Leptospirosis has long been a health challenge in cattle. Extensive research to better understand this costly disease has identified that L. borgpetersenii hardjo-bovis is the only species of L. hardjo found in the United States.

Once cattle have L. hardjo, which colonizes in the kidneys and reproductive tract, they can shed the organism in urine, placental fluids, milk and other infected fluids for weeks to months after infection. As herdmates come in contact with these fluids--or even contaminated water or small cuts in the skin of infected animals--infections can spread quickly.

Because cattle themselves are L. hardjo-bovis carriers and even calves can be a host when born, vaccination is the most commonly used method for control and prevention. The goals of an effective vaccination protocol are to provide long-lasting immunity, prevent clinical signs, and prevent renal colonization and urinary shedding.

"Research shows that there are differences among vaccines, which is why it's so important for producers to work with their veterinarians to examine which one is right for their herd," says Higdon. "Because of these new USDA approvals, dairy and beef producers now can use both Master Guard and Titanium vaccines with the confidence they will aid in preventing disease caused by L. hardjo-bovis."

Both Titanium and Master Guard vaccines are available exclusively from AgriLabs distributors. The newly labeled Titanium 5 L5 HB is packaged in convenient five-, 10- and 25-dose boxes, and Master Guard 10 HB is available in 10- and 25-dose boxes.

"While we are adding "HB" to the names of Titanium 5 L5 and Master Guard 10 to call attention to the new USDA approval, the vaccines themselves remain the same," says Higdon. "This means that people can continue using the Titanium 5 L5 and Master Guard 10 vaccines already in their refrigerators, knowing the cattle they vaccinate will receive the same protection against L. hardjo-bovis."
