1 (18 1/4 oz.) package yellow cake mix
3/4 cup brown sugar, packed
3/4 cup butter-flavored shortening, melted
2 (large) eggs
2 cups dates, chopped
2 cups walnuts, chopped
Directions: Heat oven to 350°F. In large mixing bowl, combine cake mix and brown sugar. Add shortening and eggs; beat on medium speed for 2 minutes. Combine dates and walnuts; stir into batter (the batter will be stiff). Spread into a greased 13x9x2 inch baking pan. Bake for 30 to 40 minutes or until edges are golden brown. Cool for 10 minutes.
Notes: Cool completely before cutting. Run knife around sides of pan to loosen. Yields 30 bars.
