Maple Nut Twist
Chef:  Julie Schmidt - Smith Center, KS          Category:  Breads

Ingredients:
3/4 cup milk
1/4 cup margarine
2-3/4 to 3 cup all-purpose flour
3 T. sugar
1/2 tsp. salt
1 pkg. yeast
1 tsp. maple flavoring
1 egg
1/3 cup margarine (to spread on layers)
Filling: 1/2 cup sugar
1/3 cup chopped nuts (optional)
1 tsp. cinnamon
1 tsp. maple flavoring
Glaze: 1 cup powdered sugar
2 T. margarine
1 to 2 T. milk
1/2 tsp. maple flavoring

Directions: Heat milk and margarine until very warm (120 to 130 degrees. In large bowl, blend warm liquids, 1 cup flour, sugar, salt, yeast, flavoring, and egg; mix. Beat 2 minutes at medium speed. Stir in remaining flour to form a soft dough. Knead until smooth and elastic. Place dough in greased bowl and let rise until doubled. Combine filling ingredients. Grease 12 inch pozza pan. Punch down dough and divide into 3 balls. Roll or press 1 ball to cover bottom of pan. Brush dough with melted margarine. Sprinkle with 1/3 filling. Repeat layers of dough, melted margarine, and filling with 2 other balls of dough. To shape, place a glass about 2 inches in diameter in center of dough. With scissors, cut from outside edge to the glass, forming 16 pie shaped wedges. Twist each wedge 4 or 5 times. Remove glass. Cover; let rise until light, 30 to 45 minutes. Heat over to 375 degrees. Bake 18-22 minutes until light brown. In small bowl, blend glaze. Drizzle over warm coffee cake. ,Even though this recipe seems like it might be hard to make it goes together really fast and is simplier I think than making cinnamon rolls. I have made these as gifts for teachers and friends and they are such a pretty gift to give.
