Industry continues to work on finding answers to treating PCV2

While most swine producers are familiar with the signs and symptoms associated with diseases such as porcine reproductive and respiratory syndrome or the swine influenza virus, porcine circovirus associated disease is not entirely understood and is becoming a growing concern in the United States swine industry. Alltech, Brookings, S.D., is researching this disease and ways to support health function in young animals.

Breaking out first in Canada and Europe, porcine circovirus type 2 is now found in swine operations across the United States. Porcine circovirus is a small DNA virus. The first strain, porcine circovirus type 1, has not been found to cause any disease in swine. The second strain, porcine circovirus type 2, on the other hand, can leave a negative impact on swine from nursery age to grow/finish.

Dr. Thomas Gillespie of Rensselaer Swine Services in Rensselaer, Indiana said studies have shown when the disease is active in a grow/finish unit, it can cost a producer more than $6 per pig.

According to Gillespie, there are five clinical signs associated with the disease. Producers may suspect they have PCVAD if they see the following conditions in their operation: Pneumonia, a systemic disease that will cause a growth retardation, enteritis or diarrhea, a skin syndrome such as porcine dermatitis and nephropathy syndrome or PDNS and a reproductive syndrome in their operation. High mortality has been associated in late nursery/early finisher swine.

In terms of prevention, Gillespie suggests improving sanitation and pig flow, practicing good husbandry and controlling other pathogen activity, especially PRRS, mycoplasma, salmonella and influenza.

Research is currently being conducted in the field on a functional nutrient product from Alltech that has previously shown success in maintaining healthy growth and feed efficiency in swine, and now may be showing some benefits supporting health function in young animals. This product is NuPro.

NuPro is a nutritional yeast extract derived from a select strain of yeast manufactured by a proprietary process. The four main features of NuPro are nucleotides, palatability, vitamins and highly available amino acids and peptides.
