MRHA holds 2013 finals
The Midwest Ranch Horse held its 2013 Finals and, even with an ice storm that kept 15 qualifiers and a judge at home, 50 competitors made their way to Cherokee, Okla., to compete for year-end honors. Oliver chaps, DR Topping buckles and pads were awarded to the class winners along with two saddles, cash and spurs that were presented after the short-go.
High point Horse and Rider at the 2013 Finals, and taking home $500, was Derek Heaton of Alva, Okla., riding That Ball Player. Reserve High Point Horse/Rider, and winner of the Tyler Woolfolk spurs, was Cooper Adams of Plains, Kan., on Shelby.
This year MRHA awarded saddles to two competitors with highest number of points from two regular season shows added to their scores at the Finals. The 2013 Top Overall JW Jacobs saddle was awarded to Cooper Adams riding Shelby. The Top Novice JW Jacobs saddle was awarded to Andrew Leeper of Wilmore, Kan., competing on Clancy.
Open Class—1st Cooper Adams/Shelby, 2nd Derek Heaton/That Ball Player, 3rd John Maeder of Stonewall, Okla., on Hereford Starlight.
Junior Horse Class—1st Jeff Heaton of Alva, Okla., on Pure Panther, 2nd Jeff Heaton/CS Real Shooter, 3rd Adrian Vogel of Cottonwood Falls, Kan., on Mica.
Intermediate Class—1st Derek Heaton/That Ball Player, 2nd Joe Wayland from Gage, Okla., riding Redman, 3rd Jon Christiansen of Durham, Okla., on Bob.
Novice Class—1 Travis Duncan from Fort Scott, Kan., riding Tootles, 2nd Jenna Adams from Shidler, Okla., on Sorrely, 3rd Andrew Leeper/Clancy, 4th Travis Duncan/Rambo, 5th Chad Walker from Canadian, Texas on Wes.
Youth Class—1st Colton Potter/Walnut, 2nd Carlee Potter/Texas, 3rd Gracie Bricker/Toad.
Pee Wee Class—1st Pax Vogel/Rock, 2nd Sophie Bricker/Tinkerbelle, 3rd Gracee Stierwalt/Lawyer.
The MRHA was organized to give cowboys a venue to showcase their using horses while exchanging ideas and techniques they use in training these horses. It is a judged event consisting of dry work, cow work and roping. MRHA host 12 to 15 shows a year culminating with the Finals.
