The Cattleman’s Livestock Auction, Dalhart, Texas, reported receipts of 962 head on Aug. 29, compared to 1,002 head last week and 2,237 head last year, according to the USDA Market News Service, Amarillo, Texas.

Compared to last week, a few offerings of feeder steers and heifers were mostly steady in a limited test. There was a few reputation calves, one string of feeder steers and two strings of feeder heifers that were $3 to $5 higher. The demand for light calves for winter wheat pasture grazing continues to outpace supply. Beef slaughter cows and bulls were $2 higher; dairy cows were $3 to $4 higher. The trade was active and the demand was good. The bulk of the supply was medium and large frame 1 to 2, 250- to 800-pound feeder steers and heifers. The slaughter cows made up 17% of the sales, slaughter bulls were 2% and feeders were 81%. The feeder supply included 33% steers and 67% heifers, with nearly 85% of the run weighing more than 600 pounds.
