$3.7M in assistance distributed to rural Oklahoma fire departments

Rural fire departments across the state recently received $4,474 checks to help with their operational expenses. Funded by the Oklahoma Legislature and authorized by Gov. Mary Fallin, the grant funds can be used for the operations and maintenance of the fire department including the purchase, construction, repair and operation of fire stations and fire equipment; firefighter training and the purchase of fuel.

“Each year the Oklahoma Department of Agriculture, Food and Forestry, Forestry Services Division distributes these operational grant funds to rural fire departments located in communities with a population of less than 10,000 people,” said Secretary of Agriculture Jim Reese. “Rural fire departments are a critical partner in suppressing fires across Oklahoma and these grants help communities keep their small departments operating. We appreciate Gov. Fallin and Oklahoma legislators recognizing the essential role these fire departments play in rural Oklahoma and supporting their efforts through the approval of this funding.”

Oklahoma Forestry Services also provides equipment and technical advice through its Rural Fire Defense Program. More than $15 million in equipment was distributed to fire departments in 2012.

“In addition to large equipment,” said State Forester George Geissler, “we also offer firefighting supplies and protective gear at reduced cost to rural fire departments to help them stretch their budgets even further.”
