Harvest of late season crops continues Colorado
During the week ending Oct. 20, the central focus has shifted to harvest activities for standing late season crops, which continued between precipitation events in the form of rain and snow, according to the National Agricultural Statistics Service, Colorado Field Office, Oct. 21.
Hard freezes have become increasingly prevalent while snow has been reported in greater frequency in localized portions of Colorado. High winds were reported in eastern counties, potentially damaging the winter wheat crop. On average, farmers were allowed 5.3 days in the field for operations.
Seeding of winter wheat was virtually complete as of last week. Seventy-three percent of the state’s winter wheat crop has emerged.
Virtually all corn had reached maturity by week’s end. The corn harvest progressed to 39 percent complete last week, behind 62 percent last year and 48 percent on average.
Eighty-five percent of the sorghum crop had reached maturity while 14 percent had been harvested. The sunflower harvest advanced to 41 percent complete last week. Continuing behind average, the dry onion harvest was 83 percent complete by week’s end. The sugarbeet harvest ended the week on 53 percent complete. Potatoes in the San Luis valley were 92 percent harvested. Dry beans were 81 percent harvested, behind 98 percent last year and the average of 89 percent.
Pasture and range conditions were rated 34 percent very poor to poor compared with 65 percent for the week ending September 29, 2013. On average, 39 percent is rated very poor to poor. Last week, the 4th cutting of alfalfa reached 69 percent complete.
Livestock conditions were rated 70 percent good to excellent, up from 62 percent for the week ending Sept. 29. Death losses remained at average levels for cattle and sheep. Overall, stored feed supplies remained rated as average for this time of year.
