The University of Nebraska-Lincoln, Panhandle Research and Extension Center has been awarded a Specialty Crop Block Grant from the Nebraska Department of Agriculture for “Evaluation and enhancement of insect pest resistance in confection sunflower.” The grant will provide $40,000 for the first year of an anticipated three-year project.
University of Nebraska’s Jeff Bradshaw at Scottsbluff, Neb., will coordinate the project looking at resistance to sunflower moth with Agricultural Research Service scientists Jarrad Prasifka and Brent Hulke in Fargo, N.D. This work should complement an National Sunflower Association-supported project examining specific sunflower moth resistance traits in oilseed germplasm, which is currently in its first year.
