Ada livestock sales report

The Southern Oklahoma Livestock Auction, Ada, Okla., reported receipts of 1,727 head April 17, compared to 982 head last week and 852 head last year, according to the USDA-Oklahoma Department of Agriculture Market News, Oklahoma City, Okla.

Compared to last week, steer and heifer calves were unevenly steady as no recent comparable quality of offerings have been offered. Yearlings were only slightly tested and near steady. Quality was much better this week than in recent weeks. Buyers were extremely selective toward quality and condition. Thin-fleshed and long-weaned offerings were in best demand. Green grass and improved stock water conditions improved local demand. Heifers made up 54% of supply and cattle over 600 pounds about 21% of offerings. Slaughter cows were $3 to $4 lower, 385 cows and bulls sold with about 50% going to packers. Slaughter bulls were not fully tested but lower undertones were noted. Warm, humid weather caused cattle to fill up on water hurting dressing percentages.
