Newell sheep sales report

St. Onge Livestock Co., Ltd., Newell, S.D., reported receipts of 1,001 head March 14, compared to 769 head last week and 476 head last year, according to the USDA-South Dakota Department of Agriculture Market News, Sioux Falls, S.D.

Compared to last week, feeder lambs at 90 to 100 pounds were $10 lower, other weights were not well tested, and slaughter ewes were $10 to $12 lower. There was moderate demand for feeder lambs, slaughter ewes and bred ewes, which sold on a moderate market. Many bred ewes due to the drought conditions in the area. The offering consisted of 39% feeder lambs, 29% replacement ewes, 32% slaughter ewes and bucks.

Slaughter ewes: Good 2 to 3, fleshy, 145 to 154 lbs., 27.00. Utility 1 to 2, Medium, 127 to 145 lbs., 25.50. Cull 1, thin, 116 to 154 lbs., 16.50 to 20.00 (19.24).

Feeder lambs: Medium and large frame 1 to 2, 62 to 67 lbs., 100.00 to 101.00 (100.85); 5 head, 78 lbs., 100.00; 236 head, 80 lbs., 103.50 gaunt; 47 head, 91 lbs., 104.00; 57 head, 100 lbs., 100.00.

Replacement ewes: Medium and large frame 1 to 2, Whiteface, 17 head, 206 lbs., 2 to 5 years old, pairs 137.50; 40 head, 143 lbs., 1 years old, April 15 130.00; 95 head, 167 to 197 lbs., 2 to 5 years old, now to April 15 112.50 to 117.50; 127 head, 168 to 178 lbs., 4 years to Solid, April 1 to April 15 80.00 to 97.50.
