Kansas may be better known for its beef production, but don't tell that to the 300 people who attended Kansas Junior Swine Producer Day on Feb. 16 to hear about swine selection, nutrition, daily care, and showmanship from guest speaker Kyle Baade.

The youth, who came from 45 counties, also participated in a non-competitive skillathon where they spent time at various stations identifying swine breeds, pork cuts, equipment, and feeds. The activity was a fun way to educate the participants and prepare them for skillathon competitions later in the year, said Kansas Youth Livestock Program Coordinator Kristine Clowers.

K-State Research and Extension Livestock Specialist Joel DeRouchey and graduate students Kyle Coble and Josh Flohr led the Pork Quality Assurance Plus program training where youth learned how to responsibly use antibiotics.

The Kansas Pork Association, Suther Feeds, Essential Show Feeds, and Valley Vet Supply sponsored the event.

A 32-page Show Pig Guide was distributed at the event, and is also available online at www.YouthLivestock.KSU.edu.
