Farm Survey

Meeting to focus on drought planning for Kansas cattle herds

Kansas

We have had some small amounts of precipitation this winter, but most areas of Kansas are still at deficit for effective moisture. Our subsoils are still dry from the drought last year and ponds are still low. This upcoming year will not be "normal," so how should we plan and prepare for it? What will happen to the farm or ranch if the drought persists? Now is the time to be thinking about these issues and developing a drought management plan so if tough decisions need to be made this summer, a plan is already in place that will give the farm or ranch the best chance of continuing production throughout this tough time.

"Drought Planning for Kansas Rangelands-Keeping the Ranch in Production for the Long-term" will be presented on March 19 at the Firehouse in Miltonvale, Kan. Dwayne Rice, rangeland specialist with Natural Resources Conservation Service will be speaking about "Managing Pasture and Grasslands through Drought Times." Cade Rensink, Bennington State Bank, will be presenting "Considerations for Drought-Induced Cattle Marketing" and "Limited Forage Cattle Nutrition." Finally, Robin Slattery, RVED-livestock agent, will be showcasing "Web Resources for Drought Information." The meeting will be from 1 p.m. to 4 p.m. with coffee and pie served, sponsored by Cloud County Conservation District. There is no cost to attend or registration required. For more information please contact the River Valley Extension District-Washington County Office at 785-325-2121.
