Ag Safety Awareness Program to feature Grain Engulfment Rescue DemoKansas The 23rd annual Ag Safety Awareness Program will be held on March 13 in the Auditorium at KSU Ag Research Center-Hays. Area FFA chapters and students of ag are invited to attend. A unique opportunity of witnessing a grain engulfment rescue will be presented by the Kansas Fire & Rescue Training Institute, KU-Lawrence. The public is invited to attend the presentation/demo usually conducted for only first responder units of local fire departments and grain-handling facilities workers. A customized trailer will be the centerpiece of the presentation, which will simulate grain entrapment. The trailer includes a grain bin, hopper, and an assortment of rescue tools and equipment designed to help rescue victims from potentially perilous situations. Grain entrapment incidents have been increasing over the past several years. Other ASAP topics covered this year include: safety working with anhydrous ammonia, hazards of the PTO, importance of wearing seatbelts, and ATV safety. A general farm safety presentation will add a strong impact to other potential hazards on the farm. Registration opens at 8:30 a.m. with the program beginning at 9 a.m. The program will conclude at 2:30 p.m. Lunch will be served; phone 785-628-2831 by March 11 for reservations and further information. The KSU Ag Research Center is located south of Hays at 1232 240th Ave. The Kansas Fire & Rescue Training Institute at the University of Kansas is now providing grain engulfment rescue training in communities across Kansas.
