Gelbvieh, Balancer Pen Bull Show generates excitement

Nearly double the number of pens exhibited and truly outstanding quality from previous years made for a tremendous Gelbvieh and Balancer Pen Bull Show at the 2013 National Western Stock Show. A total of 19 pens were exhibited in the show, which took place on Jan. 13 in the Livestock Center Auction Arena. Don MacLennan from Byers, Colo., evaluated the Gelbvieh and Balancer bulls exhibited in pens of three and pens of five.

The champion pen of three Gelbvieh bulls was exhibited by Judd Ranch, Pomona, Kan. At an average age of 333 days, the pen had an average weight of 1,180 pounds with a weight per day of age of 3.54 lbs. per day. This pen had average ultrasound scan data of: 15.15 inches REA; 2.91 %IMF; and 0.24 inch FT.

Bar Arrow Cattle Company of Phillipsburg, Kan., exhibited the reserve champion pen of three Gelbvieh bulls. The average measurements for this pen were: 326 age in days; 1,070 pounds; 3.28 lbs. per day WDA; 15.39 inches REA; 2.87 %IMF; and 0.27 inch FT.

Judd Ranch struck again exhibiting the grand champion pen of five Gelbvieh bulls. At 341 days in age, this pen had an average weight of 1,150 pounds, with a weight per day of age of 3.37 lbs. per day. The average ultrasound scan data was: 15.79 inches REA; 3.14 %IMF; and 0.25 inch FT.

And as with the pen of three Gelbvieh bulls, Bar Arrow Cattle Company exhibited the pen of five Gelbvieh bulls. These five bulls had average measurements of: 310 age in days; 1,145 pounds; 3.69 lbs. per day WDA; 15.49 inches REA; 2.94 %IMF; and 0.25 inch FT.

In the Balancer division, the champion pen of three bulls went to Warner Beef Genetics, Arapahoe, Neb. At 325 days old, this pen had an average weight of 1,158 pounds, with a WDA of 3.56 lbs. per day. The average ultrasound data of this pen was: 15.80 inches REA; 2.60 %IMF; 0.32 inch FT.

Taubenheim Gelbvieh of Amherst, Neb., had the reserve champion pen of three Balancer bulls. Average measurements for this pen were: 338 age in days; 1,367 pounds; 4.04 lbs. per day WDA; 15.74 inches REA; 3.93 %IMF; and 0.33 inch FT.

A new addition to the NWSS Gelbvieh and Balancer Pen Bull Show was the Balancer pen of five bulls. Champion of this division went to Taubenheim Gelbvieh. Their pen posted average measurements of: 346 days old; 1,260 pounds; 3.64 lbs. per day WDA; 14.72 inches REA; 3.53 %IMF; and 0.38 inch FT.

Judd Ranch exhibited the reserve champion pen of five Balancer bulls. The average measurements of this pen were: 352 days; 1,238 pounds; 3.52 lbs. per day WDA; 15.16 inches REA; 3.47 %IMF; and 0.29 inches FT.
