American Shorthorn Association releases updated EPDsThe American Shorthorn Association has released the updated expected progeny differences for spring 2013, which includes traits for calving ease, performance and carcass. The ASA measures 11 different traits and calculates three newly released dollar values indexes. Statistical analysis was provided by R. Mark Enns, Ph.D., and associates at the Colorado State University, Center for Genetic Evaluation of Livestock in Fort Collins, Colo. EPDs may be viewed online at www.shorthorn.org along with updated breed averages and percentile rankings. Furthermore, the 2013 Shorthorn Sire Summary is also available to view online. The annual publication contains the most current and up to date information on 537 active sires and 385 young sires. A percentile breakdown chart, EPD glossary and a breakdown of contemporary groups, supplement the data. The Shorthorn homozygous polled bulls list is also featured. Requests for a printed copy of the sire summary can be made by calling the ASA office. For data to be included in the fall 2013 genetic evaluation, all performance and carcass data must be submitted to the ASA by July 1. The mission of the ASA is to provide quality service and support to its members by promoting the value of Shorthorn cattle in all aspects of the beef industry, while maintaining the integrity of the herd book and performance database. The ASA is headquartered in Omaha, Neb., and was founded in 1872 with herd book records going back to 1822.
