Texas cattleman elected to American Simmental Board

Tim Smith, Giddings, Texas, has been elected to serve on the 16-member Board of Trustees of the American Simmental Association. Smith was formally seated at ASA's 45th annual meeting held Jan. 19 in Denver, Colo. Also seated were re-elected incumbents Calvin Drake, Manhattan, Kan.; Susan Russell, Sugar City, Colo.; and Robert Lanting, Twin Falls, Idaho, who will also serve on the Executive Committee.
The owner/operator of Smith Genetics, in cooperation with his daughter, Haley, Smith has been affiliated with Simmental cattle for 32 years, ever since he accepted a position as executive secretary of the Kentucky Simmental Association. The holder of a Master of Science Degree in Ruminant Nutrition from the University of Kentucky, he began breeding Simmental in 1980, adding Simbrah to the mix in 1984. His current operation, comprises 200 Simmental and Simbrah females, plus 100 recipient cows, was established in 1989 and is based on extensive use of embryo transfer and artificial insemination.
Smith genetics are marketed through a strong private treaty outlet with major emphasis on youth breeding heifers. He is one of 12 progressive breeders who have banded together to host the Annual Simbrah Synergy Sale and Showcase, offering $15,000 in awards and premiums. A former chairman of the ASA Simbrah Advisory Committee, he has been active in TSSA activities, is a member of the Texas Southwestern Cattle Raisers, the Independent Cattlemen Association and the Texas Farm Bureau. The American Simmental Association is headquartered in Bozeman, Mont., and maintains the breed registries for the Simmental and Simbrah breeds of cattle. ASA has an active adult and junior membership of nearly 5,000.
