Grain, hay harvests becoming widespread Colorado

Small grain and hay harvest became increasingly widespread during the week ending July 21 as conditions permitted, according to the National Agricultural Statistics Service, Colorado Field Office, July 22.

Precipitation ranged from trace amounts to locally heavy in some areas. Reporters observed some positive impacts of rainfall last week on crop conditions and moisture supplies in some localities. However, precipitation remained insufficient in other areas, leaving moisture supplies and water reserves below adequate levels in some cases. Statewide, on average, farmers were allowed 6.3 days in the field for operations.

Last week, virtually all winter wheat reached maturity while producers continued harvest activities, ending the week at 75 percent complete. This is up from 44 percent harvested the previous week. Twenty-seven percent of the state’s barley crop was turning color, behind 44 percent last year and the average of 51 percent. Harvest progress was minimal last week, with barley only 1 percent complete by week’s end. Forty-three percent of the spring wheat crop was turning color, up from 22 percent the week prior. Thus far, two percent of the spring wheat crop has been harvested.

Thirty-four percent of the dry bean crop was flowered, up from 12 percent the previous week. Corn advanced 21 percentage points from last week to 29 percent in the silk stage. Sorghum was 12 percent headed and 5 percent was turning color by week’s end.

Pasture and range conditions improved slightly from last week, with 64 percent rated very poor to poor. The week prior, 68 percent was rated very poor to poor. The current five-year average for very poor to poor is 36 percent. The second cutting of alfalfa was 55 percent complete, up from 29 percent previously.

Livestock condition ratings improved slightly from the previous week with 54 percent rated good to excellent, up from 52 percent previously. Death losses remained at average levels for cattle and sheep. Overall, stored feed supplies remained rated as average for this time of year.
