Arkansas Forage Management Conference set for Aug. 13 at Hope

Arkansas’ weather extremes can be hard on forage and livestock operations, but the Aug. 13 Arkansas Forage Management Conference can provide new tools to help ranchers make it through the tough times.

The conference will be held at the Southwest Research and Extension Center in Hope, 362 Hwy. 174 north. Registration begins at 5 p.m. The cost is $10 per person, including dinner and conference materials. Contact your county extension office or call the Extension Service Department of Animal Science at the 501-671-2171 or the research center at 870-777-9702 to register or obtain more information.

“Arkansas’ forage and livestock producers have had rough going the last two or three seasons,” said John Jennings, professor-forages for the University of Arkansas System Division of Agriculture. “This conference is an opportunity for producers to add new management tools.”

On the conference agenda:

Facts and myths about native warm-season grasses;

Effective methods for establishing clover and legumes;

Clover and alfalfa in bermudagrass for stocker calves;

Research findings on 300 Days Grazing with southern forages; and

Recommendations for using forage turnips and brassicas.

For more information on livestock or forages, contact your county Extension office, or visit www.aragriculture.org/forage_pasture.htm or http://arkansaslivestockdotcom.wordpress.com.
