Hay supplies light due to holiday closings


In South Dakota, East River Area, all classes remain mostly steady. Good demand remains for all qualities of hay. There was light interest this week due in part to the holiday week, most markets were closed, according to the USDA-Market News Service, Dec. 28. Prices given on a per-ton basis, unless otherwise noted.

East River area of South Dakota: Supreme alfalfa, large squares, $285; premium, large rounds, $280; good, large squares and rounds, $225-$250; fair/good, large rounds, $250; fair, large rounds, $240. Sun-cured alfalfa pellets, 16% $315, 15% $305. Alfalfa meal, 17% $318. Premium grass, large rounds, $260, large rounds, $220; good, large rounds, $150. Oat hay, large squares, $150. Cornstalks, large rounds, $70-$75. Wheat straw, large squares, $115-$120.

Rock Valley Iowa: Supreme alfalfa, large rounds, $280-$295; premium, large squares, $245-$285, large rounds, $245-$295; fair, large rounds, $135-$170. Premium grass, in small squares, $225-$240; good, large rounds, $175-$200; fair, large rounds, $150-$170. Premium mixed hay, large rounds, $240, large rounds, $240-$295; good, large rounds, $160-$190. Bean straw, in large squares, $75. Cornstalks, in large squares, $75. Wheat straw, large squares, $107.50-$112.50, large rounds, $110-$140.

In Minnesota, all classes of hay sold steady.

Premium alfalfa, large rounds, $180-$225. Premium grass, large rounds, $175-$190; good, large rounds, $145-$165; fair, large rounds, $125. Good mixed alfalfa grass, large rounds, $160-$225. Cornstalks, large rounds, $20-$27/bale. Wheat straw, small squares, $4.10/bale. Oat straw, small squares, $3.30/bale.

In Missouri, hay supplies within the state are light and the demand is light with prices steady.

Premium alfalfa, RFV 170-185 $200-$275; Fair/good alfalfa, RFV greater than 130-170, $160-$225. Good mixed grass hay, $100-$190; fair/good mixed grass hay, $100-$145; fair mixed grass hay, large rounds, $55-$95/bale. Fair bromegrass, $80-$120. Wheat straw, small squares, $3-$6/bale. Corn stalks stover $60-$100/ton, large rounds $25-$40.
