Kansas students participate in Taiwan Agricultural Youth Exchange
Three students selected to represent Kansas and the agricultural community recently returned from a five-day exchange program in Taiwan. The students participated in the Taiwan Agricultural Youth Exchange program, which provides students an opportunity to experience Taiwanese agriculture and culture. The exchange trip took place Dec. 9 to 14.
The Kansas students were joined by three students from Missouri and Nebraska for a tour of central Taiwan's agricultural production facilities and businesses and for meetings with Taiwanese governmental officials.
Hosted by the National Taichung Agricultural Senior High School in central Taiwan, the student representatives had the opportunity to meet with the Taiwan Ministry of Foreign Affairs and U.S. Wheat Associates and to visit the Taiwan National Palace Museum.
Student representatives from Kansas included K. Garrett Kays, of Weir; Ronald Sullivan, of Paola; and Leigh Ann Maurath, of Oakley. Kays and Sullivan are freshmen in the Kansas State University College of Agriculture and Maurath is a freshman at Manhattan Christian College. All three students were selected for their exceptional leadership and communication skills, appreciation for international travel and passion for Kansas agriculture.
Prior to the trip, Kansas Department of Agriculture Marketing and Trade Director J.J. Jones hosted an international training session for the Kansas student delegates.
"Exposing college students to international agriculture is vital to growing our Kansas agricultural economy," Jones said. "As we continue to export more food and agriculture products, it is important that we are exposing the next generation of industry leaders to international opportunities."
The coordination of the program is sponsored by the Kansas Department of Agriculture, the Kansas FFA Association and Kansas 4-H. For more information about the program, contact Kansas Department of Agriculture Education and Event Coordinator Kate Bormann at Kate.Bormann@kda.ks.gov.
